What are micronutrients?

Well, let’s break it down for you, shall we? Micro means small and nutrients are the essential components found in your food that can help your body grow stronger and healthier, so basically micronutrients are minerals and vitamins that your body requires for growth but in small amounts, these micronutrients cannot be synthesized by your body and must be present in your diet and even though the body requires these elements in small amounts, their deficiency can lead to severe diseases and some serious health issues.

Types of micronutrients and their importance

There are about 4 groups of micronutrients that need to be added to your diet for better health and immunity, these are water soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins, trace minerals and macro-minerals. For example, an essential micronutrient that is found in fresh meat and poultry is vitamin B6. This vitamin is a water-soluble micronutrient, meaning that it can be dissolved in water which and any excess is flushed out of the body and needs to be replenished through the diet daily. This vitamin contributes to energy metabolism, the proper function of the immune system and regulates hormonal activity and reduces fatigue and tiredness.

Another water-soluble vitamin that we’ve all heard about its importance is vitamin B12 or also known as cobalamin is found in cheese, meat, fish, eggs, and milk. Vitamin B12 is essential for immune function, red blood cell formation and also reduces fatigue and tiredness as well. Cheese can generally contain multiple types of vitamins such as Paneer cheese that contains both vitamin D and vitamin B which are essential for regulation of inflammatory immune responses.

Just like vitamin D, Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means its absorbed through the gut with the help of fat and stored in the liver and fatty tissue until the body needs them. Vitamin E can be found in plants oils such as olive oil and sunflower oil and participates in keeping your body healthy by protecting the DNA, proteins, and lipids from oxidative damage.

Trace minerals such as iron, zinc, copper, etc. are very important for maintaining general body health and in regulating immune system function. These micronutrients are best known for their great impact on bone health. The last group of micronutrients is macro-minerals, these are minerals that the body requires in slightly larger amounts, these include calcium, phosphorus, potassium, etc. These macro-minerals are essential for bone and teeth health as well, and also maintaining blood pressure and enzymatic functions and the general body health.
